Designer Profile : Biji Biji

Biji Biji

Biji Biji was a brainchild of the Biji-biji Initiative, a social enterprise in Malaysia formed in 2013 by a group of 4 young visionaries who set out to change the sustainability scene in Malaysia. Through their progressive ideas, they wanted to change how people look at waste and sustainability issues.

Having realised the influence fashion can have on social and environmental issues, Biji Biji committed to build a fashion brand that brings an ethical agenda to the forefront. Through their handmade fashion accessories and apparel, they want to push the boundaries and curate change in the fashion industry by transforming the alternative into the norm.

Their seat belt collection is handmade using rejected seat belt webbing, which is sourced directly from Malaysian seat belt manufacturers. The seat belt webbing is either faulty, discoloured or an offcut. Whilst the webbing is considered unusable in the car industry, it is strong, durable and easy to clean.

Biji Biji have been a member of World Fair Trade Organisation since 2019 and are committed to:

  • No forced labour
  • Fair wages
  • Safe & hygienic working environment
  • No child labour
  • Made locally in Malaysia
  • No discrimination
  • No harsh treatment or abuse
  • No excessive working hours
  • Clean & safe housing for their employees
